The Season of Salads

"A simple Greek salad," says Helen Koutalianos of Basil Olive Oil Products Ltd. of Pitt Meadows, B.C. "is a summer pleasure that can be enjoyed year-round. Whole ripe tomatoes, green peppers, onion, oregano, feta cheese and kalamata olives topped with the best quality extra virgin olive oil you can get your hands on, is the secret."

Helen and Basil Koutalianos are the Canadian arm of a Greek family farming an olive estate in Greece's Peloponnese. They import Golden Olive Eleni Certified Organic Extra Virgin olive oil into Western Canada. This first-pressing oil is available at upscale retail stores including Urban Fare, Capers Community Markets, Stong's Markets Ltd., Meinhardt Find Foods and Leslie Stowe Fine Foods. The product is found on store shelves in 250 ml and 500 ml Anfora or classic Greek-style glass bottles. In food service Golden Olive Eleni is available in 30-litre stainless-steel containers with an attached spigot. The container can be recycled to hold water or wine and is designed to protect the oil from light, air and heat, all of which can damage its quality.

"Some chefs have told me that our oil gives them 'one up' on the competition," says Helen Koutalianos. New products include a kalamata tapenade and a green olive tapenade now available in 200-gram jars for retail. Certified organic kalamata olives are packaged in 212-gram packages for retail sale and 10 kg for food service.
