Melomakarouna are traditionally prepared during the Christmas holiday season. In Greek folklore, the honey-laden sweets were meant as bribes for St Nick to bring the best gift and St Vasilis to bless all with a prosperous new year. The full flavor of the walnuts and the sweetness of the honey make these cookies hard to resist at any time of the year.

Ingredients
- 1 lb (½ kg) unsalted butter
- 2 cups olive oil
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 cup fresh orange juice
- 9 cups flour (approximately)
- 3 tbsp baking powder
- 1½ tbsp cinnamon
Syrup: - 2 cups honey
- 2 cups sugar
- 2 cinnamon sticks
- 1 cup finely chopped walnuts
Directions
Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C).
Heat olive oil and butter in a small saucepan on medium. When butter has melted, remove from heat and let cool to room temperature.
Blend sugar, orange juice, and the butter and oil mixture in a food processor. .Slowly add in flour, baking powder, and cinnamon until the dough is smooth, soft, and malleable (it shouldn't be too stiff or sticky.)
Pinch off 1 tbsp of dough to form oval- shaped cookies.
Place cookies on an unoiled cookie sheet, and bake for 25 minutes, or until lightly browned. Remove from oven and let cool.
To make syrup:
Combine honey, sugar, and cinnamon sticks with 3 cups of water in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer for 15 minutes. Remove from heat.
While the syrup is still warm, dunk each cookie into it for about 20 seconds. (The cookies should be moist but not soggy.)
Place each cookie in a paper muffin cup, to catch the syrup. Sprinkle with chopped walnuts and arrange on a platter.
